Farming With Green Energy: Janzen Shares the Latest at Indiana Farm Expo

As 2022 comes to an end, farmers are looking forward and deciding what crops to grow in the coming year. Along with corn and beans, there are new crops to consider related to green energy, such as solar farming, anaerobic digesters to “farm” methane, and even pore space carbon sequestration. Green energy as a way to diversify a farm’s income was a topic front and center at the Indiana Farm Equipment and Technology Expo held in Grand Park, Westfield, Indiana on December 13, 2022.

Todd Janzen enlightened trade show attendees on several aspects of green energy. His first topic was solar energy. As Todd discussed solar contracts to farm the sun, a key piece of advice was to get to the operational phase of the contract as soon as possible to get the income flowing.

Winds of change have brought the opportunity for anaerobic digesters to help meet low carbon fuel standards. Todd pointed out that Indiana farms have a unique opportunity to provide cleaned up methane gas to states that want low carbon fuel. “Just think - methane produced in Indiana can be fueling trucks in California,” Todd observed.

As part of his comments on pore space carbon sequestration, Todd explained the concept of pumping carbon deep into the earth to sequester it as well as the importance of collective work with other farmers and legal counsel as Indiana is ideally suited with the geography for this type of carbon capture.

A lively Q&A session illustrated farmer interest in these topics. If you are interested in Todd presenting on green energy to your organization, please contact our office at info@aglaw.us.
